Free of formal constraints and constantly evolving, experimental cinema can be difficult to define.
From the history of the genre to current practices, this theoretical and analytical workshop presents an in-depth portrait of creative trends in experimental cinema. A selection of films and videos by emerging and established artists will be presented, followed by a group discussion.
Please note that the workshop will be given in French, but questions may be asked in English. For any questions, please contact us at : services@mainfilm.qc.ca
Experimental filmmaker and video artist Guillaume Vallée graduated from Concordia University with a Major in Film Animation and an MFA in Studio Arts (Film Production). He works primarily with film (Super8, 16mm, 35mm), analog video (VHS, Hi8), and stereoscopic video (anaglyph red/cyan).
His audiovisual performances and films have been presented internationally across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia, and screened at festivals including ExIS (South Korea), Festival du Nouveau Cinéma and FIFA (Canada), Crossroads (United States), Oodaaq (France), and Animatou (Switzerland). His works are distributed by Vidéographe, Light Cone, and the Winnipeg Film Group, and have received several awards, including the Grand Prix Dérapage (2013), Best Canadian Work at WNDX (2016), and the Grand Prix Vidéo-Poésie at the Festival de Poésie de Montréal (2018).
Vallée also teaches workshops on experimental cinema and video art at artist-run centres, focusing on techniques such as hand-processing film, contact printing, and analog glitch. He has given artist talks internationally and has completed residencies at organizations including Le Fresnoy, Signal Culture, Studio 303, Light Cone, and Main Film.
Our experimental cycle continues all spring! See the full schedule here.
