Zahra Ahooei

June’s #MainArtist of the Month, Zahra Ahooei, fashions a cinematic practice that is both poetic and intimate, deeply rooted in the social and cultural realities that surround her. Through her work, she sensitively explores questions of identity, voice and visibility. Her short film Prestige, presented this month, reflects her commitment to female narratives and the spaces of freedom women invent for themselves.

Zahra Ahooei is an Iranian filmmaker, writer, and video editor currently based in Montreal. She has directed several short narrative films, including Reflex (2024), Prestige (2020), Sign Out (2017), and Extra Time (2015), which have been screened internationally and recognized with various awards. Her background also includes years of experience in journalism, television writing, and content creation for both broadcast and digital platforms.

In 2024, Zahra participated in the Newcomer Filmmentor program at the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT), where she developed her current feature documentary project.

#MAINARTIST

Our organization is an artist-run center committed to supporting its community as a whole, without distinction.

Beyond the simple declarations of solidarity against racism following the events of the summer of 2020, but also against more recent racist acts and those that persist historically, it seemed essential to us to offer a place to our members so that they can express their feelings in the face of the discrimination they experience and which could be based on the color of their skin, their origins, their sexual orientation, their gender or a handicap.

We invite them to share their thoughts on this societal issue that constitutes all forms of rejection of the other.

Main Film is an artist-run center committed to supporting its community as a whole, without distinction, in the creation of independent film.

Our 34th contributing artist is Zahra Ahooei.
