After studying law, Jean-François Lesage began his career as a journalist for Radio-Canada television in Alberta and British Columbia. In 1998, moved by his discovery of Chinese cinema, he relocated to Beijing, where he lived for six years. During that time, he directed his first creative documentary, A Night in China (2004), followed by How Can You Tell If the Little Fish Are Happy? (2009), co-directed with his brother Philippe Lesage.
Back in Montreal, he directed A Mile End Tale (2013), which closed the 2014 edition of Visions du Réel. His next film, A Summer Love (2015), won the Grand Prize for Best Canadian Feature at the RIDM. His fourth feature, The Hidden River (2017), received the Special Jury Prize at the same festival. In 2020, Prayer for a Lost Mitten won Best Canadian Documentary at Hot Docs.
Among Mountains and Streams is his most recent film.
