Laurence Ly

May’s #MainArtist, Laurence Ly, explores intimate memory through a work created from family archival material, which he invites us to discover here. His short film weaves through time, highlighting the traces left by family stories and their resonance within our collective identity. In addition to his participation in the #MainArtist forum, Laurence is an active member of Main Film and recently produced one of our (tri)Cycle projects.

Of Cambodian and Vietnamese origin living in Montreal, Laurence Ly is a director, producer and screenwriter with a master’s degree in Cinema and Moving Image from UQAM and a diploma in directing from L’inis. He directed Le petit panier à roulettes (2024), which won Best Short Film at several festivals (Les Percéides, Festival du cinéma international en Abitibi-Témiscamingue) and was a finalist for the Canadian Screen Awards for the performance of its actress. As a producer, he launched the short film Platanero (2025) at the Sundance and Regard festivals. He is also curator and programmer for the film section of Festival Accès Asie.

#MAINARTIST

Our organization is an artist-run center committed to supporting its community as a whole, without distinction.

Beyond the simple declarations of solidarity against racism following the events of the summer of 2020, but also against more recent racist acts and those that persist historically, it seemed essential to us to offer a place to our members so that they can express their feelings in the face of the discrimination they experience and which could be based on the color of their skin, their origins, their sexual orientation, their gender or a handicap.

We invite them to share their thoughts on this societal drama that constitutes all forms of rejection of the other.

Main Film is an artist-run center committed to supporting its community as a whole, without distinction, in the creation of independent film.

Our 33rd contributing artist is Laurence Ly.

#MainArtist #ArtisteImportant

Because it is artists who carry both the role of representing society and making it evolve.
