As RIDM approaches, we’d like to invite you to one of the highlights of our programming: Making a first feature film, with a focus on Documentary Portraits.
The first feature documentary film
Making a first feature film involves real strategic, artistic and human challenges that are difficult to anticipate. What are the major challenges involved in this process, which sometimes takes several years to complete and often has to be carried out on a limited budget? Come and meet directors Lamia Chraibi (CIRCO), Laurence Lévesque (OKURIMONO) and Lysandre Leduc-Boudreau (JACQUES), who will share their vision and personal experience of a crucial stage in a filmmaker’s career.
Lamia Chraibi
Lamia Chraibi is a Moroccan, French and Canadian filmmaker based in Montreal. She is particularly interested in themes of social justice, identity, family and territory. Her studies in social sciences (Sorbonne, Paris) and documentary filmmaking (INIS, Montreal) have shaped her sensitive and committed view of the world. Lamia’s cinema is based on time and trust established with the protagonists. With a poetic approach, her camera and microphone give a voice to the forgotten from diverse backgrounds.
Laurence Lévesque
In 2019, Laurence directs Port d’attache, a documentary short. The film is selected at Visions du Réel, wins Best National Short Film at RIDM and is nominated for Best Short Film at the Québec-Cinéma gala. In 2022, Laurence completes a master’s degree in which she reflects on writing and the different narratives that make up reality, winning the Prix Philippe-Ménard for best creative thesis. Okurimono is her first feature film.
Lysandre Leduc-Boudreau
Lysandre Leduc-Boudreau is a documentary filmmaker from Lennoxville in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. She is a researcher, director and content producer on various collaborations such as AmazonPrime’s For Tomorrow, various short films for Vice-Québec, ImpactTV’s De pied ferme and many others. Supported by Main Film’s Doc! program, Jacques (2023) is her first feature-length documentary.
