As part of our experimental cycle, Main Film presents Discussion Exploration: a series of gatherings taking place on the first three Mondays of June! These panels will focus on sound explorations in experimental film practices.

On this first Exploration Monday, we bring together filmmakers and sound artists who have collaborated on several experimental films. They will explore the role of sound in artistic exploration: How does it enhance the visual experience? How is a soundtrack composed—blending sound design and musical score—and to what extent does the sound work itself embrace an experimental approach? They will also reflect on the dynamics of collaboration: what they find in each other that inspires them to work together again, and how these exchanges enrich their own respective artistic practices.

Chittakone Thirakul (Hazy Montagne Mystique)

Hazy Montagne Mystique is a sound artist and explorer of immersive landscapes, fusing analog textures, modular synthesizers and experimental sound manipulation. Inspired by direct cinema, the New Wave and surrealism, he constructs works in which sound dialogues with image, oscillating between dream and altered reality. Co-founder of the space label Jeunesse Cosmique, he moves between atmospheric compositions, audiovisual installations and live performances, integrating glitch, ghostly voices and hijacked samplings. Drawing on his Tai Dam and Laotian origins, he infuses his creations with a sensitive, spiritual memory. His work, imbued with a luminous melancholy, transcends genres, creating music that is contemplative, evocative and deeply sensory, where each frequency rewrites a world in perpetual mutation.

Charles-André Coderre

Charles-André Coderre lives and works in Montreal. He makes experimental short films (Granular Film – Beirut, La noirceur souterraine des racines) and also works on live 16 mm projections for several performances and music concerts (Jerusalem In My Heart [2014-2019], Fractures Chimiques). He is particularly interested in various photochemical image alteration techniques. His practice focuses on the performative, mechanical and contaminated dimensions of analog cinema. His latest 16mm performance, Y’a Matière Au Pays des Éclairs, was presented at the latest edition of RIDM (2024) and Prismatic Ground (New York, 2025).

Étienne Hamel (Nicolet)

Etienne Hamel’s practice as a composer and sound designer revolves around the use of synthesizers and audioanalog processing devices, sampling and tape manipulation techniques, and the importance of intuition in the creative process. In addition to his activities as a composer, Etienne oversees the chansonfolk-exploratory project Nicolet, with which he has released three albums since 2017, heads the instrumental music micro-label Feu Neu Records, and works as a sound recordist, mixer and producer from his recording studio, the Waterhouse, based in Sutton.
