The Meeting Series is an invitation to explore current challenges and themes within independent cinema.
This year’s theme, Expanded Narrativity, focuses on different ways and approaches to filmmaking.

Meeting Series.1 : Renewing fiction storytelling

Lawrence Côté-Collins

Lawrence is queer, punk, alldress extra bacon. She’s a director, screenwriter, producer and sometime cinematographer. In 2024 she will release her 3rd feature, BILLY, a documentary about criminogenic schizophrenia and prison. In 2022, her feature film BUNGALOW won several festival awards and received 2 nominations at the Gala Québec Cinéma. The film, which she co-wrote and directed, is currently available on CRAVE. Lawrence is a Kinoist who has been immersed in Kino for 20 years, and some of her short films have won awards around the world. She also directs television. She has 250 TV episodes to her credit. Her passion: FILMMAKING!

Philippe Grégoire

Philippe Grégoire holds a B.A. in Film Studies and Comparative Literature from the Université de Montréal and an M.A. in Communications from UQAM, with a research-creation profile in experimental media. He is also a graduate of L’inis in screenwriting. His first feature film, “Le bruit des moteurs” (2021), had its world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, and has played at over sixty film festivals worldwide. The film won the Special International Jury Prize at the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival, the Best Newcomer Award in the National Competition at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, and the Competition Award at the Los Cabos International Film Festival.

Sophie Bédard-Marcotte

Sophie Bédard Marcotte is a Montreal-based filmmaker. Her intimate films navigate between documentary and fiction, taking a wry look at characters in search of meaning. L.A. Tea Time, her latest feature, was named one of the best films of 2020 by Radio-Canada and the Association des critiques de cinéma du Québec, and screened at several international festivals, including Visions du Réel, IDFA, the New York Independent Film Festival and Hot Docs. His next film, produced by the National Film Board’s documentary studio, is scheduled for release in 2025.

Miryam Charles

Miryam Charles is a Haitian-born director, producer and cinematographer. She has produced several short and feature-length fiction films. Her films have been presented at various festivals in Quebec and abroad. In 2022, her first feature film, Cette maison, was presented at the Berlinale, the AFI film festival, the Viennale, the TIFF Top 10 and was named one of Sight and Sound’s best films of that year. The same year, she released the short film Au crépuscule at the Locarno Film Festival. She is currently working on the films Le Marabout and L’île aux trésors.

Driven by a curiosity for new knowledge, Matthew Wolkow creates a cinema that reveals the people he meets and the stories that emerge. Situated between essay and experiment, rubbing shoulders with reality, imagination, words, music and sensoriality, his work benefits from this hybridity where form is approached as resolution. In October 2021, the Cinémathèque québécoise will devote its first retrospective to his work.
